Commissions
Charles’s portrait commissions are grounded in close observation and an understanding of each sitter’s personality, presence, and story. While he often works from life, every commission follows a tailored approach shaped by the needs of the client and the nature of the piece. Some portraits may be completed entirely from life sittings; others may combine studies from life with reference photographs taken specifically for the commission.
Charles takes time to understand the intentions behind the commission and to create a painting that feels personal, considered, and enduring.
The Process
Once the scope of the portrait is understood, sittings are arranged either in the studio or at a location convenient to the sitter. When working from photographs, we will organise a dedicated photo session to gather reference material.
A 30% deposit is taken before work begins. Pricing varies according to the size of the portrait — head and shoulders, half-length, three-quarter-length, or full-length — as well as the number of sitters.
Commissioning a portrait is a collaborative process. Clients are welcome to be involved as much or as little as they wish. If you have questions, would like to discuss ideas, or would simply like to understand the process in more detail, Charles is always happy to advise.
